The Umatilla, Florida, community is mourning the sudden passing of Benjamin “Ben” Nash, a beloved educator, coach, and mentor whose dedication to students and unwavering commitment to education left a lasting legacy at Umatilla High School and throughout Lake County.
School officials announced Ben’s passing with deep sorrow, describing him as “the heart of our AICE program” and an irreplaceable member of the Umatilla High School Bulldog family. During his 22-year career in Lake County Schools, Ben touched the lives of thousands of students, earning the admiration of colleagues, parents, and generations of young people whose lives he helped shape.
More than a teacher, Ben was known for his compassion, encouragement, and genuine investment in every student who entered his classroom. Whether serving as an educator, coach, or mentor, he believed in helping others reach their full potential. His ability to inspire confidence, provide guidance, and make students feel valued made him one of the most respected and cherished members of the school community.
Following the announcement of his passing, heartfelt tributes poured in from former students, fellow educators, and friends who remembered Ben not only for his excellence in teaching but also for the kindness and support he extended far beyond the classroom. Many described him as a trusted mentor, loyal friend, and someone whose door was always open to anyone in need of advice or encouragement.
Among the most moving tributes was one shared by Umatilla High School Principal Brent Frazier, who reflected on more than two decades of friendship. Recalling that they first met nearly 22 years ago as newly hired educators at Carver Middle School, Frazier described Ben as his best friend, brother, and biggest supporter, expressing that his loss was beyond words.
Although Ben’s passing has left an immense void, his legacy will continue through the countless students he inspired, the colleagues he supported, and the community he helped strengthen. His influence will be remembered for generations to come.
Funeral and memorial service arrangements may be announced by the family at a later date.
Heartfelt condolences are extended to Benjamin Nash’s family, friends, colleagues, former students, and the entire Umatilla High School and Lake County Schools community.
May Benjamin “Ben” Nash rest in eternal peace. His dedication to education, his kindness, and his unwavering belief in others will never be forgotten.
