The Buffalo, New York, community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Seth Kibler, a gifted swimmer, devoted teammate, and beloved son, brother, and friend, who passed away on July 15, 2026, following a courageous battle with cancer. He was 23 years old.
Seth’s passing has left an immeasurable void in the hearts of his family, friends, former teammates, coaches, and the communities at Canisius High School and Xavier University, where he was admired for his athletic excellence, determination, and outstanding character.
Canisius High School announced Seth’s passing in a heartfelt tribute, remembering him as an exceptional member of its championship swimming program and a cherished part of the Crusader family.
“Seth was a member of our championship swim program and a deeply valued member of the Canisius High School community,” said Canisius High School President Fr. David Ciancimino, S.J. “We are tremendously saddened to learn of his passing. We hold Seth, his twin brother Clayton, and all who knew and loved him in our prayers during this difficult time. May Seth rest in the peace and joy of God’s presence.”
A member of the Class of 2020, Seth established himself as one of the school’s most accomplished swimmers. Alongside his twin brother, Clayton Kibler, he was named CHS Swimming’s Co-Rookie of the Year in 2017 before earning the team’s Most Valuable Swimmer honor in 2019.
His accomplishments in the pool reflected his dedication and competitive spirit. Seth helped lead the Crusaders to success at the Monsignor Martin Athletic Association All-Catholic Swimming Championships in 2017, 2018, and 2019. During the 2019 championships, he captured gold medals in the 100-yard backstroke and the 100-yard butterfly while also swimming the opening backstroke leg of the victorious 200-yard medley relay.
Following his graduation from Canisius High School, Seth continued his academic and athletic career at Xavier University, where he competed collegiately while earning his degree. Those who knew him remember that, beyond his impressive achievements in swimming, he carried himself with humility, perseverance, and kindness that inspired teammates, classmates, and coaches alike.
Throughout his courageous battle with cancer, Seth demonstrated remarkable resilience and strength. His determination both in and out of the pool became an inspiration to everyone who followed his journey, and his legacy extends far beyond medals and championships.
As news of his passing spread, heartfelt tributes poured in from across the Buffalo community, celebrating a young man whose dedication, sportsmanship, and compassionate spirit left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Seth is especially remembered by his beloved twin brother, Clayton, with whom he shared not only athletic success but an extraordinary lifelong bond. The thoughts and prayers of the community remain with Clayton, the Kibler family, friends, teammates, and all those mourning this tremendous loss.
The family has announced that a private service will be held to honor Seth’s life.
